Professional Promise Awards

Each year, AIChE-Pittsburgh honors an outstanding senior from each of the four regional undergraduate ChemE programs: CMU, Pitt, Youngstown State, and WVU. We will present the 2008 Professional Promise Awards at the conclusion of our February Students’ Night program, which also features an invited talk by CMU’s Terry Collins.

Green Chemistry

Terry Collins

Thomas Lord Professor of Chemistry, Carnegie Mellon University

Green chemistry, according to a definition by Paul Anastas, is “the invention, design and application of chemical products and processes to reduce or to eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. Green chemistry is a fundamental redesign of the substances we are creating.”

Collins will speak on the topic of Green Chemistry from the chemical engineering perspective. He will discuss the development of safer, natural oxidation systems, and their uses for the pulp and paper textile industry, household laundry detergent, disinfection and homeland defense (anthrax killing), and destruction of pollutants. Collins will also discuss the challenges and responsibilities of 21st century engineers to develop a sustainable civilization. Challenges include developing safe, renewable energy; expanding the use of renewable feedstocks for the chemical industry; and producing a nonpolluting technology base.
